Natalie's Enduring Legacy
Although Natalie's life ended far too soon, her legacy lives on. It's a legacy of joy and happiness, a legacy of living life to its fullest, a legacy of treasuring every moment. Her untimely passing painfully reminds us of how fragile life is. May her loving spirit be remembered forever.

I would like to share with you the sermon delivered at Natalie's Memorial Service on Monday, March 26, 2007, which so eloquently captures her powerful legacy.

This is followed by two beautiful poems that give me hope.

Natalie Joy Adamo Memorial Service
By the Rev. Dr. Pam Gregory

"For several days now, I’ve been thinking about something Christopher and Beth told me about Natalie’s birth. How FAST Natalie came into this world:  10 minutes!!! I’m not just amazed by THIS, but I'm in awe of the fact that she LEFT this world just as FAST.

When studying Christian scriptures, we’re taught that when the writers are telling what Jesus did and said we’re to pay particular attention when a passage begins and ends by saying almost exactly the same thing. Not only is it obvious that this is meant for emphasis… (in case we didn’t catch it the FIRST time) but it’s called an “INCLUSIO.” Like most of the Bible (Old Testament and New), the authors of all these books of sacred text are NOT trying to RECORD HISTORY… At least not the way we think of making sure we have the FACTS, and then being careful to put them into an accurate CONTEXT.

These authors are trying their very best to share THEIR understanding of WHO God is, because whatever it is we THINK we understand about God reveals a whole lot about human beings too. And we human beings seem to have this insatiable thirst to DISCOVER, to EXPLORE, to ASK QUESTIONS… We NEED whatever CAN be known…  about God, and about ourselves. The Bible (both Old and New Testaments) COLLECTS STORIES because, very often, STORIES are the only way to tell A TRUTH that is so PROFOUND that we don’t know how to tell it (or describe it) otherwise.

I’m not trying to give you a lesson in how to study the Bible, but to explain WHY I’m so in awe of Natalie and what she’s tried to teach us. I believe that Natalie IS a story… And Natalie’s story reveals to us PROFOUND TRUTH… Natalie came into this world FAST. Natalie left this world FAST. THERE is an “INCLUSIO” – a SYNCHRONICITY, if you will. Something that cries out to us to “PAY ATTENTION!”

From what Beth and Christopher have told me, Natalie LIVED with great delight. Natalie wanted to experience it ALL. There was NOTHING she wasn’t curious about. There was little she left UN-explored. Maybe it’s fair to say that Natalie LIVED FAST. If FAST means that she lived INTENTIONALLY. She didn’t want to miss a thing!

And so maybe that’s one of the lessons she intends to teach us. LOVE IT ALL!!! EMBRACE it, TOUCH it, TASTE it, KNOW it with your whole MIND and HEART and STRENGTH and SOUL. Don’t WASTE one minute of this life! Because no matter how long you get to be HERE, it won’t be long enough. It will all go so FAST.

It makes me think that Natalie KNEW where she was COMING when she came into this world, and that she knew where she was GOING when she left this world. And so maybe this is another lesson she would have us learn. PAY ATTENTION. BE INTENTIONAL… about what you DO and what you DON’T DO… About what you SAY and what you REFRAIN from saying…

LIVE YOUR LIFE ON PURPOSE. Live each day as if it were a GIFT… because, really, it is. Live each day so that you have no regrets. Live each day knowing that you’ve gloried in every minute… in every smile, every tear, every hug, in everything TANGIBLE and INTANGIBLE. And, most importantly of all… LOVE. LOVE your life and everything and EVERYONE in it! Because there is no part of it that is not a GIFT. So let your heart overflow with GRATITUDE… Because you’ve been given so much! So much BEAUTY… So much TENDERNESS… So much LOVE.

And know that it’s entirely possible that Natalie is not done teaching us yet!  We live in a world that is PHYSICAL, TANGIBLE. But there’s SO MUCH MORE to LIFE than what we can touch and see and smell and taste.

I love it when SCIENCE and RELIGION converge. I love the fact that the New Physics has “discovered” that LIFE is ENERGY…  ELECTRIC, BIO-CHEMICAL ENERGY. I love it that ENERGY cannot be CREATED out of nothing. And I love it that ENERGY cannot be DESTROYED.

Which means, of course, that no matter how smart we human beings get, WE CANNOT CONJURE UP LIFE… NOR CAN WE DESTROY IT. It also means that, although the PHYSICAL BODY DIES, the ENERGY (or SOUL, SPIRIT) that ANIMATED that body is NOT destroyed, but TRANSFORMED. What can be SEEN becomes the UNSEEN… to the human eye, anyway. ENERGY CAN NEVER BE DESTROYED! LIFE CHANGES FORM, but it does NOT END.

There is more to LIFE than this world. And so just because Natalie has vacated her physical home does not mean that SHE has ceased to exist. So it is entirely possible that you have NOT heard the last from her. The signs, however, might be VERY subtle… very DISCREET. So we have to pay attention. But isn’t that what she’s been trying to get through to us anyway. PAY ATTENTION… Pay attention especially to SYNCHRONICITIES. And KNOW that she will NEVER be far from those she loves."

Gone From My Sight
By Henry van Dyke

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side, spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone"

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast, hull and spar as she was when she left my side. And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me -- not in her. And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone," there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying...

A Thousand Winds
By Mary Elizabeth Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn's rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet butterflies in joyous flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
